What is Maroof?

What does the name Chouqduff mean?
Chouqduff is our chosen rendering of the old Meccan dialect term for howdah; a term which can be found spelled as ‘shugduf’ in the written chronicles of travel writers and cartographers in Makkah to describe the covered camel-borne carriage once used by pilgrims and all manner of travelers crossing the Peninsula. It carried bodies across dunes, but also carried stories, intentions, heritage, and the quiet weight of faith. The spelling chouqduff reflects a North-African-style transliteration, a linguistic inheritance shaped by caravan routes, colonial-era latinizations, and the meeting of Arabic with Berber, Ottoman, and French orthographies- the gateway of the so-called “Orient.” Rather than reject this history, Chouqduff reclaims it as a reminder that even our letters are tapestries, woven from beauty, rupture, and return.
In naming the brand, we chose the version that felt most like a traveler: familiar yet foreign, desert-born yet Mediterranean-kissed, carrying that
elusive je ne sais quoi that belongs to things shaped by many worlds. What’s in a name? In this case: movement, memory, and the refusal to let history flatten our stories.
Are Chouqduff pieces handmade?
Yes. Everything we offer is handmade by artisans whose work carries generations of memory; miniature painters, silk weavers, patchwork artists, metalworkers, carpenters, and those who shape beauty with prayerful intention.
Who are the artisans behind Chouqduff?
Depending on the collection which rotates annually, our makers hail from across the historic geographies of craft: from the Atlantic coast, across Jabal Tariq, down the Nile, over the Red Sea, through the Tigris and Euphrates, and along the Silk Road routes of Bukhara and Khorasan, before trudging up the Nafud at Najd to reach your hands. These are not suppliers; rather than tradition-keepers – and Chouqduff is but a vessel, once again.
Where are your pieces made?
Read the descriptions carefully or pay attention to our Chouqduff Caravan stories as we always shine a light on the hands behind the pieces. Across Central Asia, Arabia, the Horn of Africa, South Asia, and riverland civilizations whose crafts remain living languages. Each piece has already traveled, culturally and spiritually, before arriving at your home.
How can I care for my Chouqduff piece?
Kurak is a delicate art form of hand-stitched silk patchwork. Expect:
- slight fraying or thread loosening over time
- tiny micro-tears that do not compromise wearability
- gentle aging that enhances the garment’s story
Care: - Dry clean with a specialist experienced in delicate silks; or gently hand-wash with cold water and organic soap.
- Avoid machine washing, wringing, or heat
- Store in a cool, shaded place
- Do not pull loose threads; trim gently if needed
