A hexagon atop another and another, our vintage ‘Azama set dates all the way back to the 1940s. An era that saw the unknown daughter of a clergyman named Fatima Ibrahim as-Sayed El-Beltagi transform into Egypt’s “fourth pyramid” and the greatest Arab entertainer in contemporary history. El Sett, the Lady, the legend: Umm Kalthoum. Made of vintage mahogany colored deep brown and pressed with hand-cut brass detailing, the table was originally found in a villa in the northern tip of the Zamalek Island, where the Legend once lived.⁠⁠
⁠⁠Known for her infinite vocal range, and powerful but melancholic tenor, our Azama table will take you back to an era where attending one of her legendary opera house performances was the height of privilege. It is difficult to capture how she enthralled audiences for decades. In plain terms, it is almost unseemly. ”It did not begin until 10 o'clock at night,” wrote Edward Said of his experience attending one of her shows as a young boy in Cairo. “And there did not seem to be any order to it. The musicians would wander on stage, sit down and play a little bit, wander off, and then come back, going on for 40 to 45 minutes.” In some cases, a single song was known to last over an hour, where, of her greatness, audiences could still be heard in the playback chanting: “‘Azama ‘ala Azama, ya sett!”⁠⁠ ⁠⁠
