Bukhara Bench

Our Bukhara Bench is the product of a journey, three squat chairs, a conversation with an eccentric collector in Old Riyadh, and years and years of a collective cultural fixation with Transoxionia, otherwise known as Ma Waraa Alnahr, or "the Land Beyond the River (Oxus)"

As essential to the alleyways of Old Riyadh as the Gold and Perfume shops that flank him, the collector himself shares our fixation. "Neither East nor West," he told us. "Not a single city comes close to symbolizing the caravans of the Silk Road quite like Bukhara."

Short of wrapping them into one wooden encasement, like a bundle of gifts from Bukhara to Najd, and transforming them to a caravan serai-esque bench, the three squat chairs and the myriad tin etchings that adorn them remain untouched in the over eighty years that the collector estimates they have existed.

The sands of the Oxus, toilsome though they be,
Beneath my feet were soft as silk to me.
Long live Bukhara! Be thou of good cheer!
