Fes Wall Piece

Inspired by the calligraphy in the preambles of treatises typically found in Morocco, our Fes wall piece is a tribute to Arab women of letters. A vision in gold leaf, dusty mauve and sage green, it was named for the city where Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest continually operating higher learning institution in the world, was erected in 859 AD by an Arab woman: one Ms. Fatima Al-Fihriyya Al-Qurashiya. Founded as a mosque by wealth she inherited from her late merchant father, it subsequently grew to become one of the leading spiritual and educational centers in the Maghreb and Muslim world at large. ⁠⁠

Indeed, it is only in a civilization so lettered that words are enlightenment and prose a miracle. The artisans pay tribute to this with two skirts of light-bulbs framing treated wood and finger-painted calligraphy. (Calligraphy reads: قوله تعالى يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ بِنِعْمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَفَضْلٍ)
