Princess Fawzia Fuad

Our Princess Fawzia set is a 1950’s replica of an identical one captured and preserved from King Farouk’s Abdeen Palace in the Kingdom of Egypt before its ultimate transformation to the Presidential Palace in the Arab Republic. Gently reupholstered today to aristocratic perfection by an artisans’ loft in Zamalek, the chairs display latticework notably more intricate than the average, suggesting the use of an early twentieth century metal lathe. The accompanying side table is a vision carved with precious mother-of-pearl and sharp geometric edges through-out. ⁠⁠

Copious restoration has certainly beautified this antique but does little to conceal its rich history from the days of Egypt’s grandeur. Abdeen Palace is noted as the location of the 1939 ceremony between Egypt’s Princess Fawzia -- sister of the regent and a young beauty of French, Circissian, Turkish and Albanian descent-- to the then crown prince of the Imperial state of Iran Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. The marriage did not last due, in large part, to the extreme culture clash the princess felt in Iran wherein the opulence and splendour of court-life was pithy and wanting as compared to that of her free-spending, lavish brother’s in Cairo.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠
