Product description

This wall-piece was once a scarf sold as a souvenir on the sidelines of Hajj. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact source or date of the piece. However several assumptions can be gleaned. Poor language proficiency suggests a non-Arabic speaking artist, while the Taj Mahal-esque illustrations allude to the possible source: the Indian Subcontinent. Meanwhile the portrait of King Saud suggests it is from a time shortly after the establishment of the modern Saudi state, in the early to mid-fifties.

Ever since God brought water gushing out from parched land by the foot-stomp of our foremother Hajar, communities flocked to the desert valley that is Makkah. And out from unforgiving terrain sprung a diverse metropolis cum beehive of activity and commercial center. At least once a year, throngs of believers transform the peripheries of the Holy Kaaba and numerous encampments on the Hajj rituals into one of the world’s biggest open-air markets.
